VENTANA CANYON BOULDERS
Another great area that has seen a bit of traffic over the years, but mostly seems forgotten about. Situated in stunning Ventana Canyon, the boulders are divided into two zones. The lower zone I have dubbed the Mystic Boulders, for their similarity to the seaside boulders in Mystic, CT I used to frequent. The boulders are a beautiful and featured gneiss, slightly different than anything else around Tucson. While sharing some similarities to typical Tucson creekbed boulders, these boulders have sections of gritty red surface, and lots of cool sloping rails that make for great climbing features. While there is not a ton of bouldering in Ventana, the rock and problems here are excellent. There are some excellent easier problems, and some real classic v4's, and potential for some real hard problems.
I have just begun to explore and climb at the Upper Boulders, just another 5 minute walk up the canyon. There are some impressive boulders with tall slabs, thin faces and polished overhangs. There isn't as much potential up here, but there at least twenty or so problems to be done, including some stellar looking lines. Some of the potential up here is limited by horrible landings on the steep hillside, where a 12 foot overhanging problem would essentially become a free solo. I look forward to getting up here more, and getting more info on the Upper Boulders out to everyone.
I know there has been some climbing done here in the past, so if anyone had names for problems that I have given names to, let me know and I can fix that.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS -
From Tucson, start as the usual Mt. Lemmon drive - Speedway to Wilmot into Tanque Verde. Instead of continuing to Catalina Hwy, turn left at Sabino Canyon. Follow Sabino Canyon past the turn off for the actual canyon, until the road becomes Kolb Rd. Continue up Kolb, all the way to Loew's Ventana Canyon Resort. Just past the main entrance for the resort is a sign for the trailhead parking, which is in the back of the lot for Loews. APPROACH DIRECTIONS- From trailhead in parking lot, follow the popular and well maintained trail up the canyon. Hike for approximately one mile, and you will reach the Forest Service gate. Walk through the gate and continue for another 1/4 mile. After the third stream crossing, start looking off to your left, and on the opposite side of the creek you will see an obvious accumulation of boulders. Drop into the creek here for the lower boulders. For the upper boulders, continue up the trail a bit more, and the canyon will fork. The trail head up to the left, while the creekbed is on the right. Head up the creekbed, and boulders abound. The hike is a little long, but very easy. Flat and on an actual hiking trail - pretty rare approach for Tucson! SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS- This is a popular and well-traveled trail. Be prepared for the inevitable questions about the big mattress on your back...
